Dallas Cowboys all-pro Zack Martin tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday. The season opener is on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Simple math and logic would indicate that Martin will almost certainly be out for Week 1. Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy won't rule out Martin yet. Via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, McCarthy won't give it up.

“If there was a player who can do it, Zack would be in that group of players.”

For Martin to return and be available, he would have to register two negative tests that are 24 hours apart before Thursday's game. It seems super unlikely given that he just tested positive on Saturday.

It's super odd phrasing by McCarthy, he's acting as though its in Martin's control when it's not. This isn't a return from an injury with limited practices being logged along the way, it's a virus that Martin quite literally just has to wait until he tests negative for.

There is no “If there was a player to do it (test negative),” scenario here which makes the comment bizarre.

McCarthy had initially ruled Martin out for the Cowboys opener but now has changed his stance with Tuesday's comments.

The Buccaneers have one of the best pass rushes in the NFL. Without Martin, it could spell doom and gloom for the Cowboys in the return of quarterback Dak Prescott.

The Cowboys have all their firepower returning offensively this year as they look to take back the NFC East. It starts with their matchup against Tampa Bay and it will likely be without Zack Martin.
