The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott are heading into a pivotal 2024 season, with it possibly being his last year with the team, leaving some questions regarding whether or not the franchise believes it can win with Prescott under center. Stephen Jones was emphatic when he was asked about that during a radio appearance discussing the Cowboys.

“Absolutely,” Stephen Jones said on SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio with Adam Schein, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “I mean, I totally think Dak can lead us to a championship. He does everything the right way. He's certainly the leader of this football team. He keeps everybody motivated in the offseason. He's got everybody working out and doing all the things that it takes to put in the work to give yourself every opportunity to win a championship. It just so happens that sometimes that old oblong football doesn't bounce your way. And we've had some tough breaks and tough games there in the postseason. But, you know, we've won 12 games three years in a row. I think that's right at the top in terms of what teams have done over a three-year period. And, you know, we're hanging around the rim. We've just gotta go up there and grab it, to use a basketball term, and dunk it in. we're hanging around the rum. We just gotta get the job done.”

The Cowboys are heading into this season with Dak Prescott holding a $55.455 million cap hit, which is usually too much to truly contend for a Super Bowl. There have not been any significant additions for Dallas this season. There is still talent, but the contract questions remain for three of their best players in Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons.

What is the Cowboys' future?

The Cowboys are expecting to contend in 2024, and will try to finally come out on top in the postseason. Jerry Jones has received flack for his “all in” comments regarding this season after not doing anything with Prescott's cap hit and not making notable additions in free agency.

Jerry Jones has also received criticism for not extending CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons. This is a continued trend for the Cowboys, as they are waiting until the last possible opportunity to extend their own elite players, resulting in bigger contracts than if they had gotten those deals done earlier. That was the case with Prescott in the first place when he initially signed his extension as well.

After 2024, if there is a familiar end for the Cowboys, it will be interesting to see what direction they go. Dallas could decide to move on from Prescott, as the organization might determine it can't win with him leading them. Many questions will be answered by the play on the field this season, and the actions that follow.
