The Dallas Cowboys will eventually need to lock up franchise quarterback Dak Prescott as the up-and-coming signal-caller continues to progress on his original four-year rookie contract. However, it does not appear as though the two sides are close on a new contract for Prescott at least according to Cowboys executive vice president, CEO, and director of player personnel Stephen Jones.

“There's two sides to this,” Jones recently told The Dallas Morning News. “We've really never just gotten into the weeds in terms with Dak himself in terms of what his preference is. I know he's focused on winning and really getting as many players as he can out there working so we can have a great team next year.

“At the same time I'm sure it'll be coming. There will be a point in time where we all get around and say, ‘Hey, let's get this done by a certain time and put it behind us.'”

The 25-year-old Prescott, who was originally selected by the Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Mississippi State, is now gearing up for his fourth NFL season, which will also signal the end of his rookie deal with Dallas. However, the Cowboys do have the choice of keeping Prescott in-house for an additional season if the NFC East franchise elects to exercise his fifth-year club option.

Prescott has led the heralded franchise to the postseason on more than one occasion, though the Cowboys can't seem to get over the hump en route to a long-awaited Super Bowl appearance.
