The Dallas Cowboys have spent the bulk of the early portion of the offseason adding pieces to the puzzle on both sides of the ball. One of the spots that have continued to be discussed has been their play at the free safety position that has linked their lingering interest in Seattle Seahawks All-Pro safety Earl Thomas.

With that in mind, team executive vice president Stephen Jones once again seemingly left the door open toward the possible interest in landing the 29-year-old this offseason ahead of the 2018 campaign, according to Kate Hairopoulos of The Dallas Morning News.

Although Jones did state it directly, it is a subtle hint at Thomas given that he plays that position throughout his career. The Cowboys have yet to truly address the spot especially with Byron Jones set to make the position change from safety to cornerback. This has left a potentially major hole at the safety position that could further expose the need to upgrade in that part of the secondary.

The talks about a trade have quieted down over the last several days since 2018 NFL Draft where the Cowboys had decided against moving their second-round pick to land Thomas. Meanwhile, the Seahawks still don't have any clarity about when the Pro Bowler will return to participating with the team in offseason workouts even it set to begin in less two weeks.

Thomas is entering the final year of his four-year, $40 million deal that has put his availability in the trade market a continual topic of discussion. General manager John Schneider had recently stated that they believe that their star defensive back still has some interest in staying with the team. All of this appears to be in the Cowboys to determine whether they want to make a serious push to land Thomas to help stabilize their secondary ahead of the 2018 campaign.
