The Chicago Cubs placed Jonathan Villar on the 10-day IL with a bizarre mouth injury he picked up during a freak workout accident, but it seems he's not the only key player set to hit the shelf. According to the team's official Twitter account, the Cubs have placed rookie sensation Seiya Suzuki on the 10-day IL after he'd been sidelined the past few games. Suzuki is dealing with a sprained finger which has kept him out of the lineup since Friday, and now he'll require an IL stint in order to get right.

Suzuki's placement on the Injured List will be retroactive to May 27, meaning he'll first be eligible to return 10 days from then. In a corresponding move, the Cubs selected the contract of Brandon Hughes from Triple-A Iowa, while designating veteran relief pitcher Robert Gsellman for assignment.

Suzuki, a 28-year-old rookie who moved to the MLB from Japan this offseason, had gotten off to a hot start to his career in the United States. In his first 41 games, Suzuki recorded a slash line of .245/.344/.432 with 4 home runs and 21 RBI. He's scored 20 runs for the Cubs this season and stolen 3 bases, getting caught stealing twice. Suzuki has been slumping a bit of late, however, hitting just .211 in May without a single home run.

This is the first time Suzuki will hit the IL since making the move to MLB, and he'll look to get back on track when he returns after what will hopefully be a brief stint on the shelf.
