The Chicago Cubs offloaded a handful of key assets at the trade deadline last season, blowing up the roster in order to rebuild the team more quickly. Among the players who were traded away in July was beloved first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who joined the New York Yankees for the final few months of the regular season. With Rizzo now a free agent, one MLB insider suggests that a Cubs reunion is possible for the 32-year-old. Via the Inside the Clubhouse podcast, Bruce Levine acknowledged that Rizzo could come back to Chicago on a short-term deal.

“I’ve heard that’s possible,” Levine said.  “I’ve heard that it’s not out of the realm of giving a two or three-year contract. What if you heard, once the lockout ends, that the Cubs signed Rizzo to a two-year, $40 million contract with a third-year option.”

Bringing back Rizzo would be a popular move for the franchise. The Cubs dealt him to the Yankees in exchange for a pair of minor-league prospects, Alexander Vizcaíno and Kevin Alcántara, so signing him back via free agency would essentially mean they picked up two Yankee farmhands for free.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether Rizzo is keen on a reunion with the Cubs, who are likely at least a few years away from being competitive. With the first baseman entering the twilight of his career, he may be more interested in latching on with a team with more realistic World Series aspirations.

Rizzo spent 10 seasons with the Cubs, making three All-Star Games and winning the World Series in 2016. He slashed .272/.372/.489 across 1,308 games for the franchise, hitting 242 home runs and recording 784 RBI.
