FromSoftware will be temporarily shutting down servers for a few games in response to the Dark Souls 3 exploit.

We reported yesterday the Dark Souls 3 exploit that can lead to players' computers bricking and getting taken over by a malicious user. The exploit has been around for quite a while, which has been reported to FromSoftware, developers of Dark Souls, and the upcoming Elden Ring game. The exploit is severe enough that calling it a security issue is an understatement. However, in spite of the exploit's severity, FromSoftware didn't immediately address the issue. However, after some live streams of Dark Souls 3 were used as an example to showcase the exploit and bring more attention to the issue, FromSoftware apparently took notice.

A tweet by the official Dark Souls Twitter account addressed the exploit and announced what the dev team is currently doing. To prevent the exploit from being used by malicious individuals, FromSoftware has disabled the PvP servers for Dark Souls 3, Dark Souls 2, and Dark Souls: Remastered. The downtime does not affect the PvP servers for Xbox or PlayStation, FromSoftware added. However, the dev team hasn't specified how long it will take for them to fix the issue, which affects not only Dark Souls 3, but also the abovementioned games, as well as FromSoftware's highly-anticipated Elden Ring.

With Elden Ring's release coming in less than a month's time, FromSoftware is racing against the clock in fixing the Dark Souls 3 exploit. If they do not address the issue before its release, then they will be facing a difficult decision: should they disable Elden Ring's PvP servers at launch to avoid the hacks, or should they take a gamble and leave the servers online, anyway? We'll keep an eye out to see if the issue gets resolved before the release of the game. However, we are optimistic that this issue will be fixed by FromSoftware in an ample manner quickly.
