Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders doubles down on his comments about being an HBCU grad at this week's press conference. The former Jackson State coach and Talladega College graduate said that he wasn't a Seminole because he didn't graduate from Florida State.

“No, no, no…actually, do you know where I graduated from? I graduated from an HBCU,” Sanders said in a response to a reporter who called him a Nole. “So I'm a who? No, I'm a who? I thought it's where you graduated from, isn't it? Why do you keep calling me that when you know where I graduated from? I'm an HBCU grad.”

The comments drew the ire of several Flordia State alumni, including CBS Sports commentator and former Seminole football player Danny Kanell. Kanell played quarterback for Florida State shortly after Sanders was drafted from 1992 to 1995. The former Seminole QB believes that Deion wasn't being respectful.

“Wow. The lack of respect for the school that gave him his start is wild,” Kanell said in his tweet. “The same school that retired his jersey. The same school that let him be Prime. There is a way to handle this question and this ain’t it.”

Sanders took exception to Kanell's comment and responded back via his Twitter on Thursday morning.

“My man ain't Nobody let me be me! I was Him and still is. Your jersey only get retired if you're a Dogg and 1 of the greatest ever and I was. Ain't nobody give me nothing, I took it and earned it. Stay out of Grown folks business u have no idea what is what. The Truth hurts my man. I got time!”

The tension between Sanders and Florida State dates back to 2019. He was on the list of candidates for the open coaching position at Florida State in 2019, per the Bleacher Report. However, the Seminoles hired current head coach Mike Norvell to lead the program. While at Jackson State after the 2021 season, Sanders recruited Travis Hunter and convinced him to flip his commitment from Florida State. Seminole alumni were so upset that they petitioned for his retired jersey number to be taken down.

Sander's Colorado Buffaloes face off against TCU this Saturday at 12 PM EST on Fox.
