The Dallas Mavericks may not be planning to sign Derrick Rose after all.

Following the news that linked the team to the former MVP, Eddie Sefko of Sports Day now reports that the Mavs are not pursuing Rose, despite their success in the past of adding previously-injured players. He cited the youth movement they want in place and the influx of point guards they have in their lineup as factors for them not being interested in him.

“A source said that the Mavericks are not in the market for Rose, even though they have had good success in the past with players coming off major injuries.”

“It's clear that the Mavericks are sticking to their game plan of getting younger and aiming for a couple years down the road to be serious about contending again. Rose simply doesn't fit with that strategy.”

The reasons provided does make a lot of sense, as the Mavericks drafted Dennis Smith Jr. last month, and they already have J.J. Barea, Devin Harris, Yogi Ferrell, and Seth Curry all competing for playing time. Barea and Harris serves as the veteran mentors to their team, along with Dirk Nowitzki, and they are also expected to guide Smith as he starts his NBA journey.

The good news for Rose though is there are still a number of teams reportedly interested in his services. The L.A. Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, and the New York Knicks are still in the running to re-sign him. He is slated for a huge pay cut, and it will be wise for him to sign a short-term deal this summer. If he can prove that he is durable enough to finish an entire season and still play at a very high level, it could certainly boost his stock, and set him up for another huge contract down the line.
