It has been a drama-filled offseason for the Miami Dolphins but the franchise is now in a position to be competitive for the 2022 season. After firing Brian Flores, the front office was on the search for a new head coach. However, recent rumors reveal how much money the team was willing to offer Sean Payton to be the new coach before hiring Mike McDaniel.

According to Dov Kleiman, the Dolphins had set forth a plan to sign Sean Payton to a massive contract worth $100 million over a five-year span. It would have been just the second such contract in NFL history, as the Las Vegas Raiders paid Jon Gruden $100 million over a 10-year span. Even so, Payton's contract would have given him $20 million per year, which is just an absurd amount of money.

These plans may have been foiled by Brian Flores after he filed a lawsuit against the Dolphins, the NFL, and multiple other franchises over an unfair hiring process for minorities. This deal never came to fruition and instead, Miami acquired Mike McDaniel to lead the franchise after Flores' departure.

It would have been wild to see Sean Payton sign a massive contract like that, especially after he announced his retirement from coaching the New Orleans Saints. Even though these rumors never came to fruition, the Dolphins still managed to make big improvements to the roster while retaining a young head coach with potential in Mike McDaniel.

We'll see how Miami plays in the 2022 season, as they've set themselves up to make some noise in the AFC East. If Tua Tagovailoa can put it all together, then the Dolphins should be challenging the Buffalo Bills for the divisional championship.
