Dragon Ball Sparking Zero is just a few months away from launching, and the developers released a game mode showcase. Furthermore, the game will include a split-screen mode, albeit in limited fashion. Sparking Zero is the spiritual successor to the Budokai Tenkaichi Games (known as Dragon Ball Z Sparking in Japan) which comes to the latest generation of systems. Between an interesting choice-based story mode, and unique new edit mode, there's some pretty cool things coming in Sparking Zero this October.

All Dragon Ball Sparking Zero Game Modes Confirmed So Far

Overall, the following modes are confirmed to be in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero:

  • Episode Battle
  • Custom Battle
    • Edit Mode (Included with Custom Mode)

Firstly, Episode Battle lets you control one of eight different characters, with an introduction before each battle begins. The battles you'll play are taken from both Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super. At the time of writing, we are unsure if there are any plans to incorporate any Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball GT levels/stories.

But what separates this story mode from your basic DBZ recap story mode, is the inclusion of story-based choices. One such example shown in the showcase takes place right in the beginning of Dragon Ball Z. Ever wonder what would've happened if Goku never went with Piccolo to right Raditz? Well, according to the trailer, Krillin will end up dying, which causes an enraged Goku to become a Super Saiyan.

Additionally, each character's own adventure varies in size, with Goku having the largest number of stages.

Custom Battle

In Dragon Ball Sparking Zero's Custom Battles, players fight in battles that come with their own original scenes. And within this mode, there is a Bonus Battles mode which includes original battle situations with different win conditions. Furthermore, some of these battles include mid-fight cutscenes that are triggered throughout the course of the match.

Lastly, Edit Mode, which is included within Custom Battle, lets you select any characters you want. Additionally, this mode lets you also customize the battle with different camera cuts, facial expressions, screen effects, trigger conditions, character poses, and so much more. Then, you'll be able to upload your own custom battle online for others to enjoy.

DBZ Sparking Zero Split-Screen, Multiplayer Details Revealed

Dragon Ball Sparking Zero will have Split-Screen, but it will be limited to the game's Hyperbolic Time Chamber stage. Therefore, you won't be able to fight your friends anywhere else, including iconic locations like Namek, the Cell Games Arena, and more. Furthermore, only one player can select a fighter at a time.

According to Jun Furutani, Producer of Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, there were reasons they couldn't implement split-screen. “Our focus for this game was seeing how far we could get players to really become Dragon Ball series characters. We wanted to show effects like the wind blasting around, and the weather changing just by charging your Ki – and rocks and buildings being dynamically destroyed by the force of battle, and take advantage of the power of the latest generation of consoles. With that in mind, it was difficult to implement local split-screen multiplayer while retaining those core elements, so we developed this game with online multiplayer and an offline single player mode in mind.”

No other details on Multiplayer modes were unveiled, but we do know that there will be a selection of online tournament modes for players to compete it.

Overall, that includes all the Game modes for Dragon Ball Sparking Zero so far. While we're happy to see Split-screen in the game in some capacity, it's a shame we won't be able to just play regular fights with our friends on other maps. Nevertheless, we look forward to seeing how the new choice-based story mode turns out. And of course, we highly anticipate seeing the full roster for Sparking Zero!
