In the wake of top draft prospect Zion Williamson's injury, it has been reported that Duke paid for his insurance policy to make sure that he's covered financially in case his draft stock goes down:

Williamson's injury could be a cause for concern for NBA teams who want to draft him. Teams like the New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Phoenix Suns might pass on the promising big man if the setback is serious enough.

Deandre Ayton, the first overall pick in last year's draft, is making $8.17 million this season, $9.56 million next season and then has team options for $10.02 million and $12.63 million, respectively. That is over $40 million for his rookie deal.

The second pick, Marvin Bagley III, has a rookie scale contract worth about $36 million, so that's already a $4 million difference between the top two picks from last year. The gap only gets bigger when you continue going down the line in the draft. Plus, that's only accounting for salary.

Still, the hope is that Williamson's injury isn't as serious as it looks. There's also a good chance he goes No. 1 no matter how serious it is.

Whatever happens, there are some protections in place to help Zion Williamson out financially.
