In 2012, Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten set the record for most receptions by a tight end in a single season with 110. Zach Ertz of their division rival Philadelphia Eagles broke Witten's record on the team's first offensive play of the third quarter against the Houston Texans.

Ertz entered the day needing 10 receptions to break the record and he ended up with 12 catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns during their 32-30 win at Houston.

Tony Gonzalez and Dallas Clark are the only other tight ends, besides Witten and Ertz, in NFL history to have 100 catches in a season. After today's win, Ertz has 1,158 yards on the season, Witten's career high was 1,145 in 2007. Ertz also tied his career-high with eight touchdowns so far this season. Witten caught nine in 2010.

Witten, now a commentator on Monday Night Football, wished Ertz well after the record was broken.

“He's having a great year,” Witten said earlier this month. “We all have points in our career where you just get in the zone. When I watch him on tape, I can tell he's doing things the right way. He's advanced as a route runner, using his stems, leverage, things like that to get open.”

While Witten's former team clinched the NFC East title with a win against Tampa Bay today, Ertz's Eagles stayed alive in the race for the Wild Card with their win in Houston.

Philly sits at 8-7, while their biggest competition for the Wild Card, the Seattle Seahawks and Minnesota Vikings sit at 8-6 and 8-6-1 respectively. Seattle plays the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football tonight.
