The Philadelphia Eagles have yet to name their starting quarterback for their Week 1 assignment in the upcoming regular season. A press release stated that the team will announce Friday whether quarterback Carson Wentz can finally take contact on the field, a sign that he’s going to be the team’s opening day starter.
However, there’s a growing belief that the team has already made up its mind, and it’s going to be Wentz and not Nick Foles.
This presumption should only get amplified by the sight of Wentz throwing on the field and doing drills just before Thursday’s preseason finale against the New York Jets at Lincoln Financial Field.
Carson Wentz has not played in a game since tearing an ACL during a Week 14 matchup with the Los Angeles Rams last year. Despite Wentz getting ruled out for the rest of the season, the Eagles managed to survive his absence with Foles serving as the replacement quarterback on their way to capturing the franchise’s first-ever Lombardi Trophy.
The Eagles always have Foles on standby, but the Super Bowl winning quarterback hasn’t inspired much in the limited time he played in preseason games.
Eagles coach Doug Pederson’s bubbly disposition of late has also led many to believe that Wentz is the team’s starter when they take on the Atlanta Falcons on Sep. 6., per Jeff Kerr of 247 Sports.
Last season, Wentz passed for 3,296 yards and 33 touchdowns against just seven interceptions while completing 60.2 percent of his throws in 13 games. He was considered a strong MVP candidate before his injury.
