As of this writing, the Philadelphia Eagles have 17 players set to hit NFL free agency this coming March, and veteran wide receiver Golden Tate is one of those 17 players.

The third-round draft pick from the Detroit Lions has been a bit inconsistent during his tenure with the Super Bowl winning team, but he's a good enough player to be a viable option for several teams. ESPN's own Field Yates believes that he's one of the top 25 players to hit the market.

“Graham is a really good player who is going to benefit from the names at the top of this list who also rush the passer and are likely to receive the franchise tag, as he’ll vault upward in the ranks of available players. Julius Peppers has defied age for much of his career, but at 38 is a year-to-year proposition to keep playing. Graham, who turns 31 in April, would provide the Panthers a plug-and-play defensive end for a team that has struggled to generate pressure in 2018.”

To be fair, Tate has undoubtedly done more than his fair share of good work with the Eagles. He was, after all, part of the team when it went to — and subsequently won — the Super Bowl.

But the 31-year-old had more than his fair share of problems in the off-season, as well. He underwent ankle surgery, and as a result, didn't get a contract extension. And this uncertainty about his career — despite the fact that he produced 36 tackles and four sacks through 14 games this year — meant that he wasn't going to stay with the Eagles.

So, are the Redskins a good possibility for the wide receiver?

The answer is, simply, yes — if they can afford him.

Tate told the Detroit Free Press that he knows his value has gone up, significantly — since 2014, Tate ranks sixth in the league in receptions, ninth in receiving yards, and 36th in touchdowns, and he knows this about himself. So the question remains, can the Redskins write that type of check?

“The wide receiver market is very high right now, and it wasn’t very high when I came out when I was in free agency the first time, unfortunately. It’s pretty exciting. It’s almost like, with these guys that are signing their first big deal, it’s been set. I would have never thought receivers today would be getting paid I guess what quarterbacks were getting paid just four years ago.”

It should be interesting to see if the Washington Redskins will make that investment in Tate.
