“Here we go again.” The Grand Theft Auto franchise reached new heights with its smash 2013 hit, GTA V. The game has gone on to be the second best-selling game of all time but developers Rockstar Games aren't satisfied just yet. The crime-simulator sandbox is an excellent video game to this day but it was followed with an even-better game from the same developers, Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar has their eyes set on the sixth iteration of GTA following such successful launches.

There's very little official news on the upcoming game but fans everywhere pretty much know that it's a done deal. Why on earth would Rockstar not make a follow-up to the successful GTA V and the graphical marvel that is Red Dead Redemption 2? The buzz around GTA VI is mostly rumors and purported leaks but Rockstar has let slip a few details for fans to digest while we wait for actual news. Here's everything we know about GTA VI so far.

Storywise, there's not really much that GTA V left off. GTA games offer self-contained epic stories that wrap up nicely by the last main mission. This means that GTA VI can offer a brand new story filled with crime and action. The fifth iteration of the game introduced three playable characters which are a first for the series. It's safe to assume that its sequel should be able to something grander than its older brother. Should GTA VI have only one playable character, that person will have to do a lot of heavy lifting to followup the extremely entertaining trio of the previous game. Former GTA Producer Leslie Benzies spoke about the potential ideas going into GTA VI.

“We’ve got about 45 years’ worth of ideas we want to do. We’ll pick the right ones. It comes from the idea first. Where it is going to be set is the first question. That then defines the missions; you’re doing different things in LA than in New York or Miami. The map and story get worked up together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works out so you can layer the mission in.”

Benzies has since left the game studio but we can still glean something from his statement prior to his exit. Interestingly enough, his statement mentioned New York and Miami. Fans predicted and wished for the next iteration of the game to return to the setting for GTA: Vice City or GTA IV. Rockstar proved that they're not shy about returning to an old setting when GTA V returned to Los Santos.

Rumors abound GTA

The game is in the very early stage of its development but there is already a massive list of leaked features. Now we can't verify these claims as they did come from an alleged leak but here are some of the coolest bits we found from the extensive collection.

  • Development properly started in 2015 but the team was focused on Red Dead Redemption 2
  • GTA VI will be based in Vice City and a fictional version of Rio de Janeiro
  • Some missions may take place in Liberty City
  • Set in the 1970s-1980s
  • Will feature 70s/80s soundtrack.
  • Only one playable character for the campaign
  • The campaign will operate on an episodic system
  • Weather will play a bigger part in-game.
  • Buildings and vehicles will change over eras.
  • The game is heavily inspired by Netflix's Narcos.

It's hard to imagine how it would feel going back to playing one character instead of having three interconnected characters and storylines. Regardless of this massive supposed change, Rockstar knows their stuff so fans can expect an overall enjoyable game. If the game were to go back to its Vice City setting, it would appear that they are going back in time to the rocking 80s. We may finally be able to see 1980s Vice City in all its modern graphical glory.

Hopefully, many of these features will see the light of day with the official GTA VI release. However, there's a lot of room for improvement while they're still busy building the game. Video game leaks can never be verified unless a game developer vouches for them but fans can only hope.

And now, we wait

Speaking of fan agency, there's only one thing players can do for now. It's going to be a very long waiting game for the next iteration of GTA. We can throw leaks, details, and theories around the internet but at the end of the day, we're all just waiting for a brand new sandbox to explore and/or destroy.

Recently, Rockstar Games revealed one of their current projects. An updated version of GTA V will launch on the PlayStation 5 in 2021. The port will feature technical improvements, visual upgrades, and performance enhancements. It feels like an honest effort from Rockstar to get their players hooked on the expansive GTA Online world on the next-gen console. It's a refreshing update for GTA V but you would think that Rockstar took time away from GTA VI development to work on this port.

The new GTA V port will help keep fans occupied while we wait for the all-important GTA VI to finally launch. Given how expansive, amazing, and entertaining GTA V was, it's safe to expect a great game from Rockstar.
