The Atlanta Falcons needed some quarterback help after backup AJ McCarron suffered a torn ACL in the preseason over the weekend. The Falcons are turning to former first-round pick Josh Rosen to fill that void, according to ESPN.

McCarron tore his right ACL in Saturday's preseason game against the Miami Dolphins, ending his season before it even began. McCarron and Feleipe Franks had been battling for the Falcons' open backup job behind veteran Matt Ryan. Now, it will be Rosen and Franks going at it for that No. 2 gig.

Rosen was recently waived by the San Francisco 49ers. The young quarterback hasn't been able to find a stable home in the NFL since being drafted 10th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals drafted Kyler Murray first overall the very next year, pushing Rosen out the door after just one season.

The 24-year-old has also spent time with the Miami Dolphins and Tampa Bay Bay Buccaneers in his short career. He has only made 20 appearances under center, with 14 coming as a member of the Cardinals as a rookie and six coming with the Dolphins in 2019.

According to PFT's Curtis Crabtree, the Falcons are hoping new head coach Arthur Smith can work the same magic with Rosen as he did with Ryan Tannehill when they were together on the Tennessee Titans. With Matt Ryan getting up there in age and likely on the way out soon, Atlanta needs a new quarterback of the future. The odds suggest it won't be Rosen, but perhaps he can find more stability with the franchise after bouncing around the NFL to start his career.
