The college basketball coaching cycle doesn't always yield the most predictable hires. For example, many believed that John Calipari leaving Kentucky to take the head coaching job at Arkansas was a surprising outcome, and while on the surface it may have been, dig a little deeper and you'll uncover the stories of tension between Coach Cal and the university, and you'll find that Arkansas is ready to pony up however much money they need to to become a year-in and year-out contender. So, then all of the sudden, that hire made a little more sense.

This one, I'm not so sure about.

“Green Bay is expected to hire sports talk radio host Doug Gottlieb as its next head coach, source tells SI,” per a tweet from Kevin Sweeney of Sports Illustrated. “Gottlieb has hunted college jobs for years and now gets an opportunity at Green Bay, where he interviewed last year before the job eventually went to Sundance Wicks.”

Now, for a moment, let's just try to give Doug Gottlieb the benefit of the doubt. We're just trying here, guys.

Sure, he has no coaching experience and during his career as a sports media personality, Doug Gottlieb has made his share of controversial statements, however, he was an accomplished point guard at Oklahoma State, and has loosely remained around the sport for the last two decades. But that's about as far as his CV takes him.

Predictably, the reaction on Twitter has ranged from “this is fascinating” to “worst hire of the cycle.”

(This tweet makes me wonder whether I need to up my Twitter troll game)

Yeah, one to three years feels like a fair estimate for Doug Gottlieb's time in Green Bay. Not only does Gottlieb seem to rub people the wrong way, but the Phoenix's just fired Sundance Wicks after an 18-14 season, the best finish for the school in six years. What's to say that Gottlieb won't have a short leash as well?
