The recent Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) Japan FanFest 2024 announced a feature that fans have been requesting since 2019: the ability to choose a female Hrothgar as their Warrior of Light’s race.

During the start of the FFXIV Japan FanFest 2024, players were greeted by the full trailer for the upcoming Dawntrail expansion. In the previous two teaser videos for the expansion, players could hear a female voice near the end of the teaser talking. This voice can be heard saying “At last, we have come to the land you call the New World. My home: Tural.” In the full trailer, players were able to finally see the owner of said voice: a female Hrothgar. This is also likely the same character that players can see at the end of Patch 6.5’s quests, although only her legs are visible.

During the Keynote Speech, FFXIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida further expounded on the female Hrothgar. He described them as such:

  • The Hrothgar people hail from Ilsabard. Females number relatively few among the population, but are readily identified by their lithe, muscular forms. Equally distinctive is their predisposition for leadership. A Turali people with shared ancestry, the Xbr’aal, call Yak T’el Home.

They also revealed a video that contained an in-game look of the female Hrothgar. The video showed their walking and running animations, as well as their jump animations. It also featured some of their emotes, such as pose, stretch, and more. The video ended with a shot of three different female Hrothgar characters looking at the camera.

Hrothgars were first introduced in the game alongside Viera during the launch of the FFXIV expansion Shadowbringers. At launch, Hrothgars were male gender-locked, while Vieras were female gender-locked. This led to quite a lot of players asking for these races to no longer be gender-locked. Viera was the first to receive this treatment, allowing players to create male Viera characters. Now, with the introduction of Dawntrail, players will soon be able to play as female Hrothgars,
