Recently released court documents may explain exactly why Epic Games has been very adamant in their legal battle against Apple. The Fortnite iOS saga continues, and it appears that the iOS version of the game performs worst commercially, after all.

Fortnite earnings on PlayStation – 46.8% , Xbox – 27.5%; Fortnite iOS only 7%

The Epic Apple court battle continues, as Epic produces more documents to support their case. While Fortnite‘s revenues earned over $700 million prior to being pulled from the Apple Store, it turns out that Epic earned even more from the consoles. Apparently, the Fortnite iOS version only contributed 7% to the total revenue throughout this period. Meanwhile, 46.8% came from the PlayStation 4, and the Xbox One generated 27.5%. PC, Nintendo Switch, and Android share the rest of the revenue pie.

Fortnite iOS' low revenue contribution can be attributed to two things. After all, only around 10% of all Fortnite players played using their iPhones during this time. 63% of these players had access to the game only through the iOS platform. Meanwhile, the iOS version of the game requires in-app purchases to be made on the Apple Store. Apple imposes a 30% tax on all in-app transactions made on iOS devices. This tax also applies on Android devices, to be sure, which is why Epic is taking Google to court as well. This tax on in-app-purchases deter players to purchase in-game items and currency through their mobile devices.

However, these figures show that Epic Games make way more on consoles. Even if they end up severing ties with the mobile gaming crowd, it wouldn't be the biggest blow on their revenues. Consoles, after all, prints the hard cash for Epic.
