In what was a surprising move by the Indiana Pacers, head coach Frank Vogel was let go by President of basketball operations Larry Bird in May.

Many weren’t in favor of the decision because Vogel was certainly not an issue to the city or the team, and many media members questioned the logic behind the decision.

Bird seemed indifferent to Vogel, and cited the need to score more points as his main reason for letting Vogel walk, although the roster had major holes that played a bigger part in that, as well as injuries.

He also stated he didn’t want to leave Vogel scurrying for a job late in the summer, so the dismissal was swift.

Vogel finally spoke out about Indiana since the day he left, and gave the Indy Star this interesting comment about Bird:

Larry's going to say what's on his mind and he's different. He's a different guy. If you know Larry, you know that he's different and you still love him.

Vogel is not a person to hold grudges, but maybe this situation rubbed him the wrong way. He has moved on to become the Orlando Magic’s head coach, and even had lunch with Bird over the past week, which he says was not awkward at all.

To a degree, Vogel valued his time in Indiana, and he’s able to bring what he learned with him, including how to assemble a coaching staff. He felt as though his job wasn’t done in Indiana, and some even accused him of begging to keep his job.

It was halfhearted in a joking fashion; that's all it was. I had a lot of belief in what I could do with that team with (Paul George‘s) injury behind him.

Vogel is settled in with Orlando now, and ready to coach the Magic to the next level.
