Scars of Mars is a real-time RPG. It has unique gameplay that feels like a glimpse of a new evolution of the dungeon-crawling genre. In the game, the player commands a squadron of four humanoids. In combat, each humanoid occupies one space out of a grid of nine panels. Enemies are likewise arranged in a 3×3 grid as well.
Each humanoid has attacks and attack ranges. Thus, their placement on the grid will affect who they can attack. The same applies to the enemies. Therefore, the player will need to tactically move their humanoids to evade enemy attacks and land the attacks of their humanoid characters.
Outside of combat, players navigate a node-based map. Each node will either play out story events or engage the player in battle. Battles reward players with EXP, items, and equipment. Furthermore, players can also obtain upgrades that can be used to improve their base.
Finally, players can explore the research station as long as they have enough battery energy. If the battery energy gets depleted, the player loses. They can replenish the battery by using external batteries, or by returning back to base. Players progress as they explore more of the research facility, find survivors, and defeat enemy Martians that threaten the safety of the humanoids.
