Ben McAdoo had a pretty forgettable tenure as head coach of the New York Giants. His 2017 campaign was simply disastrous. He went 2-10 through 12 games and ended Eli Manning’s incredible consecutive starts streak for Geno Smith, which ended up being the final nail in his coffin.

But as McAdoo tells Peter King of NBC Sports, one of his biggest regrets was actually his mishandling of another Giants star: wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. McAdoo confesses that he failed OBJ as a coach and excused his poor behavior on and off the field too often.

“I needed to be better for him personally, as a coordinator and head coach,” McAdoo told King, per Matt Lombardo of NJ.com. “I was too busy trying to scheme ways to get him the ball, especially early in my time in New York, that I didn't step back and see the big picture the way I should have.”

Beckham was critical of McAdoo’s offense last season. After the Giants got off to an 0-4 start, the star wideout complained that the system had become too predictable for opposing defenses. Beckham unfortunately suffered a season-ending ankle injury against the Chargers the following week.

McAdoo’s mishandling of Beckham was just one of the many missteps he made which led to his firing. His offense as a whole stagnated, and its overreliance on Beckham was only magnified when he went down with his injury.

Hopefully, new head coach Pat Shurmur doesn’t make the same mistakes McAdoo did. He will have the luxury of having a better offensive personnel to work with, which includes the returning Beckham. If OBJ can show he’s back to the level he was pre-injury and is kept in check better by Shurmur, that could mean big things for the Giants this season.
