The New York Giants traded star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. to the Cleveland Browns last week, and in return, they received the No. 17 overall pick in next month's NFL Draft, a third-rounder and young safety Jabrill Peppers, whom the Browns drafted in the first round back in 2017.

But, Giants general manager Dave Gettleman is using Peppers as an opportunity to say that New York did, in fact, receiver two first-round draft picks in return for Beckham:

“My barometer or litmus test was the franchise tag,” Gettleman said, according to the Giants' official team website. “So, just for the sake of discussion, or explanation, if we had not signed Odell back in August, and we had played the season out and we had put the franchise tag on him — if another team had signed him, and we didn’t match it, we would’ve gotten two first-round picks. So, that was my litmus test. Oh, and by the way, as a point of reference, it has only happened once in league history, that was in ’98 with Carolina signing [defensive tackle] Sean Gilbert off the franchise tag. Again, as our litmus test, it turns out we not only got two first-round picks, but we also got a third.”

Well, that's not really how it works, Dave.

By that logic, you can say that any player who was picked in the first round in any year is worth a first-round pick. So, basically, the Giants could have received JaMarcus Russell in the deal, and Gettleman could have then technically said, “We received two first-rounders.”

The deal is already enough value as it is, Dave.

No need to dress it up more.
