Eli Manning may have hung up his cleats for good, but there was a point in time that the New York Giants quarterback had considered playing one more year. Back in the day, though, he was nearly a member of the then San Diego Chargers.

While it seemed like a great idea at the time, Ryan Leaf revealed that the Mannings talked to him to convince him out of letting the franchise draft him. Hooray for the Giants.

From The Pat McAfee Show on Friday:

“Archie and his family had called my father and wanted to know how they treated his son,” Leaf said about the future Giants star. “And that was a huge part of [Eli demanding a trade]. Because, even as poorly as I behaved, there was no support. And for the longest time I held a resentment around that, but what was my part? I finally had to take a stock in that. But [Archie] did his due diligence. He called and like, ‘what happened when things went bad? What did they do to help support your son?’

The Chargers are a notorious franchise that doesn’t have any solid direction when it comes to their future. While they have talented players in their employ, their inability to surround Philip Rivers with worthwhile talent during his tenure is proof of their inability to help him make a deep playoff run. The Giants are a bit of a different story.

Thanks to Leaf, Chargers fans missed out on seeing one of the better QBs suit up for them. The Giants are thankful and blessed. As proven by a couple of Super Bowl rings and the like.
