The New York Giants have undergone a plethora of changes on the coaching staff ahead of the offseason.
According to ESPN, the Giants are expected to hire former Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio as their next defensive coordinator.
Former Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio is a leading candidate to become Pat Shurmur's defensive coordinator with the New York Giants, league sources told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.
Del Rio has spent the last three years with the Raiders where he led the team to a 25-23 record over that span, which includes guiding the franchise to their first playoff berth since 2002 with a 12-4 record last season. The 54-year-old has plenty of experience in that position as held that spot with the Denver Broncos from 2012-14 and in 2002 with the Carolina Panthers. He was also the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2003-11.
Last season, the Giants struggled tremendously defensively finishing ranked 31st overall and against the pass while being 27th in rushing situations. What should be taken into consideration is that their defense was hit with injuries to key players on that side of the ball while the offense's inconsistencies certainly contributed to that.
New York has some strong pieces to build around defensively with Damon Harrison, Janoris Jenkins, Olivier Vernon, and Landon Collins. The front office will likely add a few more pieces to the puzzle on that side of the ball over the offseason in either free agency or through the draft.
The Giants have yet to land their next head coach, but there is the expectation that Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur will take the position. The team is allowing Shurmur to handle his responsibilities with the Vikings in the NFC Championship Game before taking the negotiations any further. There should be more clarity in New York to both of these situations in the coming days.
