Earlier in the NFL offseason, the New York Giants and superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. seemed to be destined to part ways. The wideout was dealing with an off-the-field controversy with a video that leaked and also expressed interest in signing a historic contract extension before the 2018 campaign.

With mandatory minicamp on the horizon for New York, Beckham and the Giants appear to have repaired their relationship. The real question now is whether a long-term extension can get done between the two sides without any hiccups or holdouts as the showdown is forthcoming in New York, via Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv.

Odell Beckham, Jr. wasn't at the Giants' practices this week, which didn't matter much since he hasn't been cleared to fully practice anyway. But he's getting “pretty close” according to head coach Pat Shurmur.

And that means a showdown between the Giants and Beckham could be getting pretty close too.

It remains to be seen whether Beckham will stick by his original stance to not play until he's paid or put faith in the organization that something can get done promptly. The Giants brass has a plan in place for how they want to deal with this situation with their star player, according to Vacchiano.

The Giants — after their brief, bizarre, and ill-conceived public flirtation with trading their star receiver in late March — seem to want the same thing. They just want it done on their own timetable. Their preference, according to a team source, is to first make sure Beckham has fully recovered from the ankle surgery he underwent in October and is still the same explosive player, and to give it a little time to make sure he really is doing his best to remain controversy-free. Then they will be willing to open their vault.

Last year, Beckham's season came to an end prematurely due to a fractured ankle after only four games. This comes with some concern with the team more than likely having to make Beckham the highest-paid wideout in the game to keep him long-term.

It'll be interesting to see how things pan out and if a lucrative deal gets done before the start of the 2018 NFL season or it goes beyond that.
