New York Giants rookie quarterback Daniel Jones looked fantastic during his preseason debut on Thursday night, completing all five of his throws for 67 yards and a touchdown in what ended up being a 31-22 win over the New York Jets.

Jones only played one series, but he probably would have come out for a second drive had it not been for an hour-long weather delay that ended his evening.

So, could a quarterback competition be brewing between Jones and Eli Manning in the Big Apple?

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur says no:

“I think, ‘Slow your roll,’” Shurmur said when asked what his response would be to fans who think Jones should be the starting signal-caller come Week 1, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “This is just his first go around. I think he did a good job. As I mentioned, all along he has done nothing to disappoint us, and certainly when you take the team down the field and score a touchdown, that’s a good start. It’s something good to build on. We have a lot of time left before we start playing games. Nothing at this point has changed.”

Shurmur added that Jones also made some mistakes that only the coaching staff would see:

“He didn’t motion the tight end across on the first play,” Shurmur said. “Those types of things. Things that we see. As I mentioned, to the naked eye, you possibly didn’t see.”

So, while Jones did look good in limited action on Thursday evening and may certainly end up proving his legion of doubters wrong, Shurmur is right: we should probably relax in anointing him the new starter.
