Despite overtures from both FOX and ESPN to become their new high-profile color analyst, Peyton Manning has decided to stay away from the broadcast booth for now. Apparently, the reason for his decision is a little close to home.

According to Andrew Marchand of the New York Post, Manning specifically did not want to call games involving his brother, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.  There was even some discussion of keeping the Giants out of their primetime schedule if Peyton had agreed to call Thursday night games.

But while that aversion to doing Eli’s games wasn’t a deciding factor in declining the offers from FOX and ESPN, it was a part of it. It seems clear that Manning doesn’t feel entirely comfortable commenting on – and, likely, be overly critical of – his younger brother in front of the entire nation.

That sounds like a completely understandable feeling to have. While Jon Gruden felt fine calling Redskins games for years even with his brother Jay coaching, it’s likely not quite as easy for other people to professionally critique a family member.

Since Manning is obviously not in need of cash given the fortune he earned as a player, it made sense for him to avoid doing he was not completely on board with.

Apparently, Manning’s main goal in the future doesn’t lie in the broadcast booth, but in a luxury suite as a team executive a la John Elway or as a part-owner. Apart from his dislike of calling Eli's games, his lack of burning ambition to be a broadcaster could ultimately dissuade networks from attempting to lure Manning into the booth.
