It was all but a formality that Gordon Hayward would accept his $34.2 million player option not even two months ago.

Hayward rebounded after a frustrating 2018-19 season, averaging 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists for the Boston Celtics during the regular season. The former Butler star also shot over 38 percent from beyond the arc and proved himself a capable wing defender.

However, Hayward's persistent injury issues — including a sprained ankle in the playoffs — made it unlikely he would garner a lucrative long-term deal in the event he opted out.

But Gordon Hayward did find that deal, as the Charlotte Hornets signed him to a four-year, $120 million contract.

The 30-year-old explained his rationale behind signing with Charlotte on Tuesday. Hayward said he decided to opt out of his deal with the Celtics after gathering more information about Charlotte's plan for the future. He also remembered the Hornets submitting an offer sheet when he was a restricted free agent with the Utah Jazz. And, of course, Michael Jordan played a role:

Charlotte drew criticism for the monster deal, especially considering the length of it. But it seems Michael Jordan and Co. have been very intrigued by Gordon Hayward's game for quite some time. He might also be the best fit for the roster.

The Hornets will have to figure out the backcourt and how to share the rock. But the addition of Hayward alongside LaMelo Ball gives Charlotte two high-level playmakers who can each create their own shots. Devonte' Graham and Terry Rozier were already in place as the starting backcourt, so how the rotation and touches shake out will be something to watch.

Regardless, the Hornets feel Gordon Hayward can be a big part of their future. It would seem Hayward feels the same, though the money certainly helped matters.
