An executive who works for the Memphis Grizzlies believes putting stat benchmarks on point guard Ja Morant for his rookie season “would be silly and not productive.”

The Grizzlies are handing the keys to the franchise to Morant now that Marc Gasol and Mike Conley are both gone. Morant was the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

“(We want Ja to) learn and get better. That’s all,” the Grizzlies executive told Keith Smith of Real GM. “To put stat benchmarks on him would be silly and not productive. If he’s a better player month-by-month, that is what we want. And if we get to the end of the year and can say he is much improved from the start of the year, it was a successful season.”

Ja Morant didn't play in Summer League. He was recovering from knee surgery. Morant averaged 24.5 points, 5.7 rebounds and 10.0 assists per game at Murray State in 2018-19 while shooting 49.9 percent from the field, 36.3 percent from beyond the arc and 81.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The Grizzlies are building their team around Morant and big man Jaren Jackson Jr. Memphis is hoping Morant and Jackson Jr. will be the next Conley-Gasol connection.

The Grizzlies won't be contenders for quite some time. The most important thing right now is developing Morant and Jackson Jr. the right way.
