Report: Grizzlies signing Bruno Caboclo to 10-day contract
Bruno Caboclo was a cult hero in Toronto. Now, he will get his chance to win over the people of Memphis.
Caboclo had been playing with the Houston Rockets’ G League team, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In 28 games with Rio Grande Valley this season, Caboclo was averaging 16.4 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals over 28.3 minutes per game while shooting 51.6 percent from the floor, 42.8 percent from 3-point range and 74.4 percent from the free-throw line.
The 23-year-old forward, who came over to the NBA from Brazil, was originally selected by the Toronto Raptors in the first round (20th pick overall) of the 2014 NBA Draft.
Caboclo never got much of an opportunity in Toronto, playing in just 25 games across three and a half seasons. During that time, he never averaged any more than 1.6 points per game.
Due to his length and athleticism, many felt that Caboclo had potential, but he has yet to show it on the NBA level.
He was eventually traded from the Raptors to the Sacramento Kings in February 2018.
Given the state of the Grizzlies right now, it is entirely possible that Caboclo will get some minutes, as it’s not like Memphis has anything to play for over the remainder of this season.
The Grizzlies currently own a record of 19-27 and have gone just 7-22 since a surprising 12-5 start. They have lost five games in a row and 11 of their last 12 games overall and may be preparing to put Marc Gasol and Mike Conley on the trading block ahead of the Feb. 7 trade deadline.
