A Bungie veteran weighs in on what he thinks of the Paramount+ Halo TV series compared to their original vision for Halo.

Fans may like or hate video game adaptations of beloved video game franchises, but their opinion isn't as weighty as the opinions of those who actually made the games. Just recently, one of the co-creators of the original game, Bungie veteran Marcus Lehto, shared what he thought about Paramount Pictures' version of Halo. Responding to a fan, he says:

“I’m not sure where the inspiration for the show comes from now. Not the Halo I [helped make].”

Lehto later clarifies that he doesn't mean that he hates the show. “Some parts are interesting,” he says. “Just confused by many of the choices that were made which feel pretty far outside the core fiction I helped create.”

A lot of fans share Lehto's sentiments. While the show is fun when it comes to the action and special effects, many are befuddled by the creative direction of the show's story and the characterization of the game's heroes.

Marcus Lehto worked on the original game and was involved in the series until Halo: Reach's release in 2010. Reach would be the last game in the series developed by Bungie, who would later work on the Destiny series instead. With Bungie now being owned by Sony, it's highly unlikely that the Bungie folks will ever touch the video game franchise again. Meanwhile, 343 Industries would eventually take Halo in a wholly different direction, so the Halo we have today is also very different from the Halo back then when Lehto and the rest of Bungie were in charge of the series. At least for that characteristic, the Halo games of today have something in common with the Halo TV show we have on Paramount+.
