The Atlanta Hawks were planning to pursue Jaylen Brown and Domantas Sabonis in restricted free agency next summer, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The Hawks won't get that opportunity now, as Brown and Sabonis signed rookie-scale extensions with the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers, respectively:

Before Pacers forward Domantas Sabonis and Celtics forward Jaylen Brown reached contract extension agreements, the Hawks were believed to be interested in either player as a restricted free agent, sources said. Atlanta is one of four teams (Charlotte, Cleveland, Memphis) projected to have significant salary cap space in the 2020 free agency period.

Brown signed a four-year, $115 million extension with the Celtics, while Sabonis got a four-year, $74.9 million deal from the Pacers.

The Hawks have a really nice young core, headlined by Trae Young, John Collins, Kevin Huerter, De'Andre Hunter, Cam Reddish and Bruno Fernando. Sprinkled in are veterans Vince Carter, Jabari Parker, DeAndre' Bembry and Evan Turner.

Atlanta hasn't made the postseason since 2017. The Hawks are 2-3 on the young season. Young is currently out due to a sprained ankle, but once he comes back, the franchise has a decent chance to compete for that 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
