The Atlanta Hawks were killed by pundits when they traded Luka Doncic to the Dallas Mavericks on draft night in 2018 to get Trae Young. Most scouts thought Young was too small to be successful in the NBA and his struggles in Summer League only brought more criticism on the Hawks' front office.

Fast forward to today, and Young is one of the NBA's most promising young guards. He won the Eastern Conference Player of the Week honor for week 1 of the 2019-20 season and has the Hawks thinking playoffs.

The narrative around Young has changed since draft night. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, teams weren't even trying to trade up for Young in the 2018 draft because they had too many questions about him:

“There were so many questions about him among teams in the lottery,” Wojnarowski said on The Woj Pod. “I think he would have went to Orlando if he did drop to them, but there weren't teams, like, moving up to try to get him.

“I remember in that draft there were teams trying to get up to get Jaren Jackson at four from Memphis.”

The Hawks haven’t made the playoffs since 2017. In a wide-open Eastern Conference, Young and Atlanta are eager to prove the world wrong and make a postseason run.

Young averaged 19.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 8.1 assists per game as a rookie while shooting 41.8 percent from the field, 32.4 percent from beyond the arc and 82.9 percent from the free-throw line. He's putting up 34.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 9.0 assists through the Hawks' first three games of this season.
