It looks like Trae Young and Adidas jumped the gun a bit on the Atlanta Hawks superstar's botched Team USA stint for this summer's Olympics. Adidas recently unveiled a new colorway of Trae's signature line and it happened to be in Team USA's red, white and blue colorway.

Awkward.

As we all know, the Hawks guard was snubbed by Team USA for the Olympics despite the fact that Young had an outstanding 2020-21 campaign with Atlanta. To make matters worse, Trae didn't even get the call as a replacement when Bradley Beal and Kevin Love both withdrew from the squad.

Nevertheless, Young was in a bit of a jovial mood as he shared a snap of his fresh pair of kicks on Instagram. Instead of sulking about the snub, he decided to just roast himself with a hilarious caption on the photo (h/t Chris Kirschner on Twitter):

“Workout shoes?”

The Hawks stud decided to come out with a self-deprecating jab mocking the fact that he'll never get to wear this pair as it was originally intended — as a member of Team USA for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. When you think about it, this was probably the best way Young could have reacted to what turned out to be a really awkward situation.

Trae Young is without a doubt one of the brightest young stars in the NBA today. He may have missed out on this year's national squad, but he's likely going to have a few more chances down the road. Perhaps he can save this pair for a later appearance for Team USA?
