Much like most of us expected, the Miami Heat have successfully secured the top spot in the East with the best record in the conference. This has been a long time coming and it was only a matter of time before the Heat's dominance all season long would result in them claiming the No. 1 spot in the conference ahead of the playoffs.

Miami's first-round opponent has yet to be determined, though. The seventh to 10th seeds in the East are all neck-and-neck and they will all need the final day of the regular season to determine the final rankings. For his part, however, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra admitted that he's not paying much attention to the various Play-In scenarios at the moment. Apparently, this is because of his lack of aptitude when it comes to anything involving mathematics:

“I was never good at math, and had everybody explain all the different scenarios,” he said, via Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “That’s when you lose me in 30 seconds.

“It will play out the way it was supposed to play out.”

That's fair. And we appreciate the brutal honesty from coach Spo here. Nevertheless, this doesn't make this confession any less surprising considering how Spoelstra is considered by many as one of the smartest basketball minds in the game today.

While the Heat shot-caller may be playing down the scenarios that could play out in the mini-tournament, there's simply no way that he's taking this for granted. Don't mistake his confusion with apathy. I'm pretty sure that coach Spo and his staff are already well-prepared to face any of the four teams that are in contention for the No. 8 seed in the East.

To be honest, it's truly quite complicated. The Brooklyn Nets, the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Atlanta Hawks, and the Charlotte Hornets comprise the seventh to 10th seeds in the conference, respectively. Everything will be on the line on the final day of the regular season on Sunday and at this point, any one out of these four teams could still end up as the eighth seed once the playoffs begin. Spoelstra has probably taken on this same mindset and has prepared for any and all eventualities.

Coach Spo then talked about his Heat clinching the No. 1 spot in the conference and how much this means to them.

“It does mean something,” he said. “I think you can take gratitude from that and gratification from a meaningful regular season. It’s not everything, but it definitely is something. And I think it’s always good to shoot for something in this league, and to compete for something.

“It wasn’t something that we were talking about every single day, but we talked about learning how to win, and to do it without excuses, and to do it with a lot of different things that are coming our ways this year, and the adversity and guys in and out of the lineup.”

Erik Spoelstra has always been a big picture type of coach and his statements here are a clear testament to this fact. This is why Heat fans can rest easy knowing that their team will be ready to battle it out once the postseason officially kicks in. Miami now has a tremendous opportunity to win their first championship in the post-LeBron James era.
