Amid the coronavirus pandemic that is taking hold of both the country and the world, many people have been left without jobs as companies shut down due to safety concerns. With COVID-19 affecting the sports industry especially hard, the Miami Heat are committed to doing what they can to help those in need.

The team announced on Twitter on Wednesday that they would be providing disaster relief assistance to team and AmericanAirlines Arena part-time staff. Additionally, the organization will provide funds for food, beverages, security and housekeeping to “assist workers during this challenging and unprecedented situation.”

The Heat will also donate $1 million to the Miami Heat Charitable Fund at the Miami Foundation to establish an initiative specifically for employees and community needs as they arise in the future.

Miami is one of the many organizations and players that have donated money or time to help those affected by the pandemic. New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson pledged to pay the wages of employees at the Smoothie King Center for 30 days while Detroit Pistons star Blake Griffin did the same.

On the court, prior to the season being suspended due to the coronavirus, the Heat had been one of the brightest surprises in the entire league. Led by newly acquired star Jimmy Butler and third-year center Bam Adebayo, Miami had compiled a 41-24 record through 65 games which was good for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

As coronavirus cases surpass 7,000 in the country and across all 50 states, many organizations will have to do what they can to aid those in need.
