It looks like Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. is preparing early for next year's Slam Dunk Contest.

During the Miami Pro League, Jones wowed the crowd with a couple of insane dunks that sent the crowd to their feet.

Jones, one of the most exciting high flyers in the NBA today, just threw down a nasty alley-oop dunk that came off a sick (and somewhat outrageous) assist as well.

In 2017, Jones participated in the Slam Dunk contest but wasn't fortunate enough to win. He was supposed to participate again last season, but an injury forced him to sit it out.

Maybe third time's the charm for the 22-year-old University of Nevada product.

Aside from his ability to throw ferocious dunks, he's also expected to play a key role for the Heat next season. Although his numbers from 2018-19 aren't something that would get most fans thrilled (7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in 60 games), it is worth noting that Miami refused to include him in any trade last month. That speaks volume about the franchise's belief in his potential.

For the Heat, Jones is more than just a dunker. He could turn out to be a special player if properly developed. The team isn't really in a position to compete for a championship next season, so a significant part of their focus will be on the growth of the younger guys on the roster.

Undrafted in 2016, Jones worked hard to prove that he belongs in the NBA. Now, it is time for him to take his game to the next level.
