Despite standing at 6-foot-11 and playing center for majority of his career, Dwight Howard had always wanted to play at the guard position as well. In some All-Star Games he has participated in the past, there have been moments wherein he tried to act as playmaker and setup his teammates for an easy basket.

During Wednesday night’s preseason game between the Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons, the 31-year-old attempted that again. He showed off his improved handles, by going coast-to-coast, before spinning for a two-handed slam over Boban Marjanovic.

The clip can be considered good news for the Hornets, as their new starting center is proving that he can also operate from outside the paint. Although he is not expected to make similar plays often, Dwight Howard still made it known that he has the ability to dribble the ball across the court, and finish strong to the basket when needed.

If he can develop this skill further, and create some shots for him off-the-dribble, he could turn himself into a big man with small forward moves, and become a nightmare matchup for their opponents. He may be 31 years old now, but it’s never too late to add a new weapon to his arsenal, especially as he tries to resurrect his career with the Hornets.
