We're only a little over two weeks before the House of the Dragon's season two premiere on HBO and showrunner Ryan Condal is hinting at least two major battles to look forward to, Den of Geek reported.

When we left the first season, Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) received the devastating news of her son Prince Lucerys Velaryon's (Elliot Grihault) death and that of his dragon Arrax. Luc died in a rain-soaked mid-air battle with his uncle Prince Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) and his dragon Vhagar. This sets Rhaenyra on the warpath and the upcoming second season is the actual start of the Dance of Dragons.

House of the Dragon, as the prequel to the massive HBO hit series, Game of Thrones, has big shoes to fill. At its peak, Game of Thrones brought the epic Battle of the Bastards and the Battle of Winterfell to the small screen.

Condal told Den of Geek, “We can fit two Avengers films inside of our shoot schedule.”

The showrunner said, “We have two of the largest sequences that we've ever filmed on House of the Dragon. Both of them outstrip anything that we did in season one. They are episodes within episodes.”

The series, based on parts of George R.R. Martin's 2018 novel Fire & Blood, tells the story of the Targaryen civil war: Rhaenyra's Team Black vs. Queen Alicent's (Olivia Cooke) Team Green. While Game of Thrones was praised for the cinematography of its battles, it only had to deal with Danaerys' (Emilia Clarke) three dragons: Drogon, Viserion and Rhaegal.

The Dance of Many Dragons

HBO, Game of Thrones

House of the Dragon is living up to its title. The first season alone has nine dragons, including the largest dragon in the world, Vhagar. The upcoming second season will add five more, including the Bronze Fury, Vermithor. He's the dragon Prince Daemon (Matt Smith) is singing to in the last episode of the first season. Vermithor was once ridden by King Jaehaerys, King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and Daemon's grandfather.

Season one's nine dragons are (excluding Vermithor, Vhagar and Arrax): Syrax (Rhaenyra's), Caraxes (Daemon's), Seasmoke (Laenor Velaryon, John Macmillan), Meleys (Princess Rhaenys', Eve Best), Vermax (Jacaerys', Harry Collett), Dreamfyre (unclaimed) and Balerion (Viserys).

Season two's five dragons (excluding Vermithor) are: Sunfyre (Aegon II, Tom Glynn Carney) and Moondancer (Baela Targaryen, Bethany Antonia). We see both these dragons in the trailer. The three others are the wild, unbonded dragons in Dragonstone Daemon mentioned in the first season: Grey Ghost, Sheepstealer and the terrifying Cannibal.

Condal said that even though Rhaenyra and Alicent are heading the war councils, the war will be mainly fought by their children.

House of the Dragon: The war will be fought by the children

“‘The kids,' as I say — Alicent and Rhaenyra's children — take center stage in this conflict. We put a lot of focus on them and their stories because it really does become about them,” he said.

Rhaenyra's eldest son Jacaerys Velaryon is away, trying to establish Team Blacks' support in the North with the Starks, when he receives news of Luc's death. This serves to ignite Jace's fury.

“From Jace's point of view, it's Jace's war now,” Collett said.

“Because he's lost his little brother over it. He is one of the characters that actually wants to be in the war,” the actor added.

While Condal teased two Avengers-like battles, one sure battle that we may see in the second season is the Battle at Rook's Rest which will pit Rhaenys' Melys against Aegon and Aemond's Sunfyre and Vhagar, respectively. Another dragon battle we could see is one worthy of both the Velaryon and Targaryen name: the Battle of the Gullet. This will feature Jacaerys' Vermax as well as those of the dragonseeds' against the Triarchy, Daemon's old enemy in the first few episodes of the first season.

We'll know for sure when season two of House of the Dragon will premiere June 16.
