The Indiana State basketball team was perhaps the biggest snub from the NCAA Tournamwnt field. As a result, Josh Schertz led his team all the way to the NIT title game before they fell just short against Seton Hall on Thursday. Right after the loss, reports came out that Josh Schertz was headed to become the new head coach at Saint Louis, per Matt Norlander of CBS Sports.

‘The search led to Schertz. Barring an unexpected change by Friday morning, Saint Louis is expected to hire Indiana State's Josh Schertz as its next coach, sources told CBS Sports.'

The deal is expected to be around $12 million for six years, per Rick Semmler of WTHI.

‘According to sources close to the situation.Sports 10 was informed that as early as Friday morning and at the latest within next 24 hours Sycamore coach Josh Schertz is expected to be named the next coach at St. Louis. Sources say deal is 6-years for $12 million plus incentives.'

With Indiana State's season coming to a crushing end, it now looks as if Schertz is going to leave the program for the job with the Billikens. Schertz had previously been a favorite for the Saint Louis job and had his name emerge right after the March Madness field was announced, so this isn't a surprise.

What is surprising is that Schertz reportedly turned down jobs at Louisville and Florida Atlantic amid the Sycamores NIT run.

Schertz has been around the coaching ranks for quite some time but has suddenly experienced a meteoric rise. He was the head coach at Division II Lincoln Memorial from 2008 until 2021, going 337–69 with nine D2 tournament appearances, which included two Final Fours and one runner-up finish.

The Sycamores went just 11-20 in Schertz's first year in 2020-2021 but went 23-13 last year and made the CBI quarterfinals. This year was the season Schertz put himself and Indiana State on the map as they finished with a 32-7 record and were left stunned after they were snubbed from the Field of 68. The Sycamores fell to Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference title game, 84-80. Still, they won 28 games and 17 in MVC play, yet were not chosen by the selection committee.

Robbie Avila, who became known as Cream Abdul-Jabbar, did all he could for the Indiana State program before they fell short in the NIT title game against Seton Hall, 79-77, in the closing seconds of a thrilling game.

Now, Schertz goes to the A-10 and will be one of the highest-paid coaches in the conference. Saint Louis is coming off a rough year, finishing 12-19 overall and 5-13 in A-10 play, just ahead of George Washington at the bottom of the conference.

The Billikens moved on from Travis Ford after a disappointing season and have now taken a huge swing by hiring Josh Schertz, an up-and-coming coach who has a chance to turn around the Saint Louis program just like he did at Indiana State.

The college basketball coaching carousel continues with this latest move.
