After the Utah Jazz traded Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves for a massive haul of players and picks, it was reported that the team is now planning to retool around Donovan Mitchell. According to the latest rumors, however, that might not necessarily be the case.
While the idea is there to surround Mitchell with better complementary players, Andy Larsen of The Salt Lake Tribune noted that the Jazz remain open to trading the superstar guard to start a full rebuild. They already got four first-round picks from the Timberwolves in the Gobert deal, and they could certainly get more if they decide to trade Mitchell.
Larsen also noted that the Heat are expected to be aggressive in trading for Mitchell if he's made available, especially if they miss out on Kevin Durant.
After another brutal exit in the 2022 postseason, the talks about the Jazz trading one of their superstars or blowing things up fully intensified and eventually led to the Rudy Gobert deal. As reported, though, the Utah franchise is said to be far from done in making moves as they explore their options in free agency.
It remains to be seen what they'll end up doing with Donovan Mitchell, but all eyes will certainly be on them as free agency continues. Should they make the star guard available, a number of teams are expected to call and ask them about the price.
If they end up keeping Mitchell, it'll be interesting to see the players they'll sign and surround him with in a bid to get over their playoff woes.
