The New York Jets are in need of help in their secondary, and they may be turning to a former AFC East foe to get it.

According to Manish Mehta of The New York Daily News, the Jets are having internal discussions to free up money in order to pursue free-agent cornerback Logan Ryan.

Ryan was one of the better defensive backs available entering free agency. So the fact that he is still without a deal seems a bit puzzling.

Of course, teams may feel that Ryan is asking for a bit too much money. Mehta notes an NFL Network report from last month that said Ryan is seeking $10 million annually. While that may make sense given the fact that he spent his last three seasons on a three-year, $30 million contract with the Tennessee Titans, it may also seem like a steep price for a cornerback who has never made a Pro Bowl.

The Jets are very familiar with Ryan, who spent the first four years of his NFL career with the New England Patriots.

Ryan, who played his collegiate football at Rutgers, was originally selected by the Patriots in the third round (83rd pick overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft.

During his time in New England, the 29-year-old helped the Pats win a couple of Super Bowl titles. He then made his way to the Titans.

Ryan is coming off of an impressive 2019 campaign in which he racked up 113 tackles, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions, four forced fumbles and 18 passes defended.

The Jets went 7-9 this past year.
