The New York Jets secured a backup quarterback, former Minnesota Vikings signal-caller Trevor Siemian. It seems New York has future Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning to thank for pointing him in its direction.

Trevor Siemian revealed that he was either going to sign with New York or Minnesota this offseason. According to Ethan Greenburg of the team's official website, Peyton's high opinion of Jets coach Adam Gase was all he needed to hear:

“I texted Peyton and just went back and forth with him, but he obviously thinks a lot of Coach Gase,” said Siemian. “Being with some of the guys that were there in Denver when Coach Gase was there, before I had gotten there, they spoke really highly of him. That and a bunch of other reasons are why I’m here and I’m super excited.”

Gase had served as Manning's offensive coordinator for two seasons prior to Siemian's arrival in Denver. He had the opportunity to learn from Manning the following year as a rookie in 2015 when the Broncos' star led them to a win in Super Bowl 50. Siemian will now have an opportunity to make a fresh start under a coach who is respected by Manning.

Trevor Siemian, a fifth-year veteran, has started 24 games in his career. He has largely underwhelmed during his time under center, throwing for 5,686 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 24 interceptions while completing 59.3% of his passes. Regardless, his experience as a starter should make him a viable backup to quarterback Sam Darnold in this new-look Jets offense.
