The New York Jets made a splash with the addition of running back Le'Veon Bell in free agency. However, it appears running back Ty Montgomery has quickly started to establish himself as the clear-cut backup.

Ty Montgomery signed with the Jets following a rocky 2018 campaign. According to Bryan Costello of the New York Post, he has made quite an impression through OTAs and mandatory minicamp:

Montgomery has had a strong spring for the Jets. He has been the beneficiary of Le’Veon Bell staying away for much of the voluntary portion of the offseason program. Montgomery has gotten a ton of reps. He looks like a good fit in Adam Gase’s offense because of his versatility as a runner and pass catcher.

It is encouraging to see that Montgomery appears to be thriving in New York. He is hoping to bounce back from a rough year with the Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Ravens. The most notable point in the season for him was when he muffed a kick return against the Los Angeles Rams and was subsequently traded to the Ravens.

Regardless, it is clear that Montgomery is looking to capitalize on his new opportunity with the Jets. His versatile skill set will provide head coach Adam Gase even more firepower to work with in 2019. Although it is safe to assume the Jets will be relying heavily on Bell, they will still need to find some solid complementary options in the backfield. Montgomery will also be able to make an impact on special teams as a return man.
