With Todd Bowles appearing to be on his way out as head coach of the New York Jets, the Jets will once again be stirring the market for another guy to try and lead what has been a dysfunctional franchise for some time now.
One of the top guys on their list? Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.
McCarthy spent nearly 13 seasons as the head coach of the Packers, leading the team to nine playoff appearances, including a Super Bowl title during the 2010-11 campaign.
However, due to a disappointing year in which McCarthy went just 4-7-1 over his first eight games and clashed with franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Packers decided to part ways with the long-time coach. Since his firing, though, McCarthy has been strongly linked with the Cleveland Browns.
McCarthy took Green Bay to the postseason an impressive eight years in a row between 2009 and 2016, but the Packers are now on the verge of missing the playoffs in back-to-back years for the first time since 2006. Last season, Green Bay was without Rodgers due to a good chunk of the year as a result of a broken collarbone. The Pack ended up finishing 7-9 and missing the dance.
Still, McCarthy has quite the resume, especially in comparison to Bowles.
Bowles was hired as head coach of the Jets ahead of the 2015 campaign, and in his first year, he showed a lot of promise, leading New York to 10 wins and just missing a playoff berth. But, since then, Bowles has gone just 14-32, and for a Jets franchise that has not made the postseason since the 2010-11 season, that just isn't cutting it.
