John Martin Collins III was born in Layton, Utah. Due to the nature of his father's work, he and his family spent time in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, and Turkey. He grew up being a soccer fan, although he would of course take up basketball as his sport.
He attended and played ball for Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida. Collins then committed to Wake Forest. Although he was certainly a bright prospect as a mobile big at 6-foot-10, his freshman performance was rather unremarkable; he put up just 7.3 points and 3.9 rebounds per game. This led him to continue playing in his second eligible season.
That was when Collins roared to life. He was a consistent 20 PPG scorer as a sophomore and earned multiple ACC Player of the Week Awards. He led his team in scoring and rebounding with vastly improved numbers of 19.2 points and 9.8 boards per game. For his considerable efforts, he was awarded the ACC Most Improved Player Award and earned a First-Team All-ACC selection. Enter the 2018 season, and the Hawks got their hands on undersized but talented point guard Trae Young. Despite a rocky start, Young and Collins would show a lot of promise to be a dynamic duo in the future, despite the team languishing in the East. With his improvement and an excellent facilitator in Young, Collins vastly improved his scoring to 19.5 points to go along with 9.8 rebounds per game. This season also saw him score his career high of 35 points against the Chicago Bulls. However, he'd be suspended for most of the latter part of the season due to violating the league's anti-drug policy.
Nevertheless, 2019-20 saw the young power forward have his best statistical season to date. He cracked the 20 PPG mark with an average of 21.6 points while also averaging 10.1 rebounds. The trajectory of his career looked fantastic, as he looked to be another steal in his draft akin to the likes of Bam Adebayo and Jarrett Allen. However, as it was, his Hawks found themselves at the bottom of the East once again.
Next season, the young Hawks looked to have another disappointing season, with Collins following suit. The team floundered once again at the bottom of the East. However, as Nate McMillan took over the team, the Hawks came alive to clinch the No. 5 seed. Collins, for his part, ended up with a good season, although he was not able to better his previous season with averages of 17.6 points and 7.4 rebounds.
Incredibly, Collins and the Hawks had an unlikely Eastern Conference Finals run after upsetting the 1 seed Philadelphia 76ers in the semifinals. This was at the back of Trae Young's heroics, as well as Collins' solid performances as a role player. The feisty unit would get felled by the eventual champion Milwaukee Bucks in six games, but it was a valiant stand nonetheless.
After the playoffs, Collins inked a five-year, $125 million contract with the Hawks. This was after refusing to sign a rookie contract extension and going into free agency.
