Stranger Things has once again taken the world by (scary, red) storm. The Netflix show's fourth season was a huge hit worldwide. It has caught the eyes of many across the sports world, including legendary NBA center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The NBA's all-time leading scorer has some critiques for the Duffer brothers-directed series, though. Abdul-Jabbar wrote his thoughts on Stranger Things' season four ending in his newsletter. He said that the final 20 minutes of the season undid a lot of the great work leading up to it.

But the final episode is 140 minutes (2 hours and 20 minutes) and the pacing in that episode is not conducive to the length. Especially the aftermath following the “defeat” of the villain Vecna.

I’m cool with having cliffhanger endings to a series’ season, but that is only effective if you’ve closed the door on other storylines, so I at least get some sort of satisfaction for all my invested time, emotion, and gnawed fingernails. But the ending here is mostly more open doors and questions.

Abdul-Jabbar writes that the death of Martin “Papa” Brenner was anti-climactic and that the final scene of the season doesn't make sense. Still, he says that he is excited about the fifth and final season.

Brenner's death came at the hands of a military sniper from a helicopter as he tries to save Eleven from a U.S. government official that wants to capture her. Abdul-Jabbar insists he should have been offed by someone he personally wronged (like Eleven or Dr. Sam Owens). The NBA legend has a point here, though Eleven does ultimately get closure with the doctor that forced her into the traumatic life she has.

The ending to season four of Stranger Things was indeed a wild one. Unlike the past three seasons, this one ends with imminent danger still present in Hawkins. Vecna ultimately opened the gate between the Upside Down and Hawkins hat he wanted to, though he is badly injured. The last shot of him in the season features his body on fire and motionless after getting shot and falling from his attic's window and onto the house's walkway. However, his body is not there moments later when the gang goes to check on him.

In addition to Stranger Things' cliff-hanger about Vecna's death, Max Mayfield's status for season five is also uncertain. After surviving Venca's attack and losing consciousness after she's freed from her trance, she remains unconscious in a hospital bed. One of this season's new characters, Eddie Munson, takes up the role left behind by Bob Newby and Alexei as someone who captures the hearts of fans only to be murdered. Eddie, like Bob, sacrifices himself for the group and pays the ultimate sacrifice.

Season five of Stranger Things will begin filming next year and could be released as early as 2024. Abdul-Jabbar will be one of the millions of fans worldwide anticipating it.
