The Sacramento Kings have long been linked as a frontrunner in the trade sweepstakes for Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons.

They've consistently ranked as one of the top destinations for Simmons among various sportsbooks and also check the California team box that he seems to desperately want from his next club.

However, based on Kings GM Monte McNair's latest comments to the media, it sounds like the team is going into the season as is.

Via Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee:

“This is going to be our team going in,” said Kings GM McNair. “I look at our roster and I see a lot of versatility, guys who can slide up, slide down and really give us different looks.

Talking with Luke, I think we’re excited about the possibilities of different lineups, how we can match up in different situations. I think we actually have pretty good roster balance in the sense of, not traditional thinking, but … I think we can put a lot of different lineups out there to match up with whatever we need.”

It could very well be a smokescreen to hide his interest, but McNair's words were phrased very definitively. The Sixers were rumored to have been asking for the moon and stars in their trade offer to the Kings, which they reportedly balked at.

Ben Simmons trade or not, the Kings certainly have a huge logjam at the guard spots.

Incumbent star player De'Aaron Fox is flanked by recent lottery picks Tyrese Haliburton and Davion Mitchell, with shooting guard Buddy Hield still on the roster. It'll be interesting to see how the Kings handle their roster as the season starts, both on and off the court.
